When beginning a fitness program, remember to emphasize reshaping rather than just shrinking.
Muscle is heavier than fat, so the scale can discourage us even when healthy changes are in progress. Don't weigh yourself regularly. Instead, use the fit of clothing or belt holes to map your success. Look for muscle definition or cuts -lines of separation between large muscle groups-as evidence of improvement. Also, focus on the way you feel, not just the way you look, as you monitor your progress. This matter more than the numbers on the scale.
